Dr. Horney founded Agility Consulting and Training in 2001 and has been recognized for innovations in organizational agility theory and practice which includes The AGILE Model®. Nick has consulted with global leaders to help transform their vision to action by anticipating change and building more adaptive capabilities. Dr. Horney has been recognized as an expert in organizational agility by journals such as People & Strategy and CIO Magazine, books such as Rothwell, et. al’s Human Resource Transformation (2008) and organizations and professional associations such as the American Management Association, Project Management Institute, IBN International and Human Resource People and Strategy. He has recently presented at the Global PMI Conference and PMI’s PMO Symposium on the topics of Change Management, Talent Management and Organizational Agility.
Prior to forming Agility Consulting, Dr. Horney served on the Executive Committee of the Center for Creative Leadership (CCL) as Vice President of Client and Constituency Relations. His agility and change management consulting experience spans over 30 years and includes the start-up and management of the Coopers & Lybrand (now Price Waterhouse Coopers) Change Management Practice. Representative clients include Coca-Cola, Harrah’s Entertainment, Hanesbrands, Lenovo, Siemens, CIA, ARAMARK, REI, Celanese, Nationwide Insurance and R.R. Donnelley. Prior to consulting, Nick held senior leadership roles in the consumer products industry (Divisions of Nestle and Pepsi).
Dr. Horney was a primary contributor to a book in 2013 published by the Project Management Institute entitled Managing Change in Organizations. He recently co-authored a book in 2015 entitled Focused, Fast and Flexible: Creating Agility Advantage in a VUCA World and coauthored a book in 2000 entitled Project Change Management, published by McGraw-Hill. Dr. Horney is working with AMACOM on a book that features a 10-year study of leadership agility with 1078 global leaders. The working title of this book is Decoding Your Leadership Agility: Getting Fit for Continuous Course Corrections. He has authored or been interviewed for various podcasts, magazines and journals (e.g., People & Strategy, The National Productivity Review, Training and Development Journal, CIO Magazine, enterpriseleadership.org, Bank Marketing Magazine, American Way–American Airlines In-flight Magazine, etc.) addressing agility and change management issues.
His work on the topic of agility has been presented at professional association conferences, internal company management conferences and at universities (e.g., Rochester Institute of Technology, Cornell University, Wake Forest University, UNC Charlotte and Rollins College).
Dr. Horney’s first-hand knowledge of agility and change management was developed during his 23 years as a Navy Special Operations officer leading diving and explosive ordnance disposal teams, where agility was a defining characteristic of success. Nick retired from the U.S. Navy Reserves at the rank of Captain.
The Secretary of Commerce appointed Dr. Horney to the Board of Examiners for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. He also helped establish and served as a judge for the USA Today Quality Cup Award for ten years. Nick recently served on the Board of Human Resources People and Strategy (HRPS) and served on McKinsey’s Online Executive Panel, the Chief Learning Officer Magazine’s Business Intelligence Board and the Advisory Board for the Business School of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He currently serves as a Judge for CLO Magazine’s LearningElite best practice award.
Nick has served as a LearningElite Judge for the Chief Learning Officer Magazine since 2014. He received his Ph.D. in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from the University of South Florida.
